Today Ant, Syd and I were walking through Walmart trying to waste some time while my tire was being repaired for a flat. As we are walking along, I spotted some off the wall brand of soda that had a camaflouge design on it. I said, “Hey Ant, that soda matches your shirt”. Of course in true 4 year old fashion, he said “No, it doesn’t, my shirt is not green” (ugh, details!) I decided to pursue my comment (I should know better) and said that it was a camaflouge design just like the shirt he was wearing. He then asked “what is camaflouge?” (I should have seen that coming). I explained that camaflouge was an army print just like his shirt. He accepted my answer and we moved along.
About 15 minutes later and across the store, Ant asks “Mama, what is camel squash?” Now, you have to realize that he has been talking non-stop for the last 15 minutes and this was TOTALLY out of context, just another random question in a long stream of interregations. Here’s how the conversation went:
Ant: Mama, what’s camel squash?
Me: What?
Ant: What is camel squash?
Me: Camel Squash?
Ant: Yes, what is camel squash?
Me: What are you talking about?
Ant: Camel Squash (duh!)
Me: Camel Sqaush?
Ant: Arrrrgh, yes, camel squash!!
Me: (thinking… what in the world is he talking about?” Finally I figure it out…) Ohhhhh. Do you mean CAMOFLAUGE?
Ant: YES! Camel Squash!
Me: Baby, I told you… it is an army pattern like your shirt.
Ant: Oh, okay.
Me: (ugh! Is my car ready yet?)

Guess what? You won one of the Roadmap To Holland books! Just send me your address when you get the chance!

Oh! That made me laugh! Now when I see someone wearing camel squash, I’ll giggle.

Okay, now I am on a mission. Wait until we introduce Anthony to natural animal camoflauge. I’ll start looking for good books on this subject for his age. I did find a little stuffed bird that sounds real for Syndey. You never know one of them could grow up to be the next global naturalist.
5:54 pm
Now that’s hysterical! I can just hear him. It reminds me of “what’s carsastic Grandma?” No wonder I love him to pieces!
8:14 pm
That is too precious! I love this age!!!
